  I stayed here when the owner of the B&B I had booked needed to find me alternate accommodation as the ceiling of the room I was supposed to have stayed in had collapsed. The owner, Linda, offered to pick me up from the railway station (kind, but unnecessary) and would not take "no, thanks" for an answer. At this point alarm bells should have started to ring. I was accommodated in the front bedroom which was rather dark and smelt overpoweringly of a cloying scent that I discovered came from some sort of plug-in scent device (which was very quickly unplugged). Anyone who is allergic to scent would have had problems! The only seating option (other than perching on the end of the bed) are two garden chairs with a cushions on them - pretty, but uncomfortable. Guests are given a key to the front door of the house. The windows of the front bedroom face onto the car-parking area. The bathroom is light and airy with a spacious walk-in shower and adequate shelving. Breakfast was a daily ordeal. While the food was very good, Linda assumed I was her "new best friend" and sat opposite me while eating her own breakfast and telling me about her online dating experiences and other personal matters. Not content with that, I was interrogated about my personal life - she wanted to know if I had siblings, if my parents were still alive, what I did for living, where my husband worked and for how long had he been with the company etc. No amount of vague answers, or my changing the subject, would put her off. A frequent visitor to the UK for the last thirty years or so I am well-accustomed to "B&B banter"; ie, "how long are you here for", "where else have you been", "what do you plan on doing when in town etc". but Lindas line of questioning is just plain intrusive. As was I seated at Lindas table I could hardly ask her not to sit at it and so felt I had to resort to subtle messages (reading a book or newspaper at the table, changing the subject, not answering the questions) that I didnt want to talk. Unfortunately Linda doesnt understand "subtle" and the daily interrogation continued. One morning at breakfast Linda asked if I minded her going on a trip to Birmingham with her latest online beau. Did I mind? No, it meant one morning of peace and quiet. A good selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurts etc were left for me and I ate quickly and in peace. Bliss! The trip to Birmingham did, however, mean that my room was not serviced that day. I would have thought knocking a fiver or so off the final bill would have been appropriate under the circumstances but no, I was charged the full amount for my stay. While the B&B is in a great location, I simply cannot recommend it. Stay here only if you want your life picked over in minute detail by someone whose business it is not. Linda is a friendly person who is proud of her city but she needs to "read the signals her guests send out, particularly in relation to whether or not they are comfortable hearing about her personal life or sharing theirs with her.
